Custom Labels

Please feel free to download this assortment of press ready PDFs and QuarkXPress templates and project files that you can use to print your own labels. These files are intended to be used by professional printers and graphic designers. The press ready PDFs can be handed off to your printer as-is (if you want labels for these examples). I had them printed on semi-gloss or glossy letter size label stock at a local print shop using a digital printer (xerographic or laser printing technology). All files use color management for color consistency in printing.

These are Macintosh files, but they can be downloaded and used on a Windows PC. The workflow I use is basically the same. First I will create a single label layout in Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator, then save the layout as an Acrobat PDF file. In either case, all the fonts are embedded, so whether the layout was done in Photoshop or Illustrator there is no worry about the fonts coming out smooth. The choice whether to use Photoshop or Illustrator will depend on whether I want to use bitmap artwork for a rough look or vector artwork for a smooth look.

After I prepare a single label in Photoshop or Illustrator I will generate an Acrobat PDF file and place that PDF file in a QuarkXPress 4-up or 10-up template. The template is setup with crop marks for cutting the labels. I will output the final 4-up or 10-up press ready Acrobat PDF file and hand that off to the printer for printing and cutting. I will usually include the QuarkXPress source files just in case the printer needs them.

When you download and work with any of the source files (indicated as "Source Files" below), you will need to have the fonts installed on your local computer. The fonts I used came with the Operating System (Arial, Arial Narrow, Apple Chancery), Adobe CS, (Trajan Pro, Charlemagne Bold) and from the TrueType collection of Ghostscript fonts urwfonts-1.41.tar.bz2 (Coronet). You can find Apple Chancery on many font sites. Just search Google for "download apple chancery font". Arial Narrow is commonly installed with the Windows and Macintosh operating systems and with Microsoft Office and many other applications.
